Service Learning Center

Mission

The Menlo-Atherton Service-Learning Center (SLC) provides equally accessible service opportunities, empowering students of all backgrounds to find purpose by serving the Menlo-Atherton Community.

The Case for Community Engagement

Students...
  • are more likely to understand and critically understand course content (Tannebaum, 2008).
  • social skills are enhanced (Bailis and Melchior, 2002).
  • sense of identity is improved as are peer relations (Kelshaw, 2009).
  • feel more confident in their ability to identify issues, work with others, organize, take action and build a commitment to participation over the long term (Bailis and Melchior, 2002).

"It [Service-learning] is a group effort in the end. I definitely have been impacted by it because it is one thing to say we have a problem, but it is another to actually see the people impacted by it. It has opened my eyes to the multitude of inequalities around me and made me realize how fortunate I really am.” -M-A Junior

Learning Objectives

M-A High School Service-Learning Objectives:
  • Social Justice: Identify, recognize and analyze the social structures that underpin injustice in our society and understand the relative privilege or marginalization of your own or other groups.
  • Civic Engagement: Recognize the importance of agency and life-long responsible citizenship in personal and professional activities in ways that benefit underserved populations.
  • Celebrate Diversity: Embody our motto of “strength in diversity” by looking beyond your own perspective and understand the way others see the world. Appreciate the knowledge, wisdom, assets and skills that individuals in these communities possess.
