Advancement via Individual Determination - AVID

AVID is an acclaimed nationwide program designed to assist students in meeting the challenges inherent in education and attaining the dream of a college degree. AVID is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance. The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID Goals at Menlo-Atherton High School
Our AVID goals are to provide academic instruction and other support to students to prepare them for success in four-year colleges and universities, to improve student organizational and critical-thinking skills, to increase student involvement in community service, to prepare and support students for success in the most rigorous high school courses, and to empower students to achieve academic excellence.

Students take an AVID class as part of their seven-period day. Students learn to read critically, take notes across the curriculum, develop writing skills for all classes, and participate in group learning activities with tutors. In class, students prepare for college entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT and visit college campuses in both Northern and Southern California. Students develop interpersonal relationships, enhance self-reliance, and participate in extracurricular and community activities.
